Lynley George is a multi-media artist based in Sydney. She creates narratives through her works that relays her lived bodily experience.
Through exploring her embodied life as a woman, she attempts to create work that negotiates the corporeal and the abject. She aims to un-shame, thus celebrate attributes historically associated with the life of women, as witnessed in her own life.
About Lynley
While being a practising artist for twenty years, I have also worked studying the fluidity and movement of the female body through experiencing my hands-on work as a Pilates and Gyrontonics instructor, through dance, and through years of Tantra study which includes a continuing and dedicated personal practise.
My work usually, if not always, relates to my lived bodily experiences or those close to me. By experimenting with mediums, I am endeavouring to explore materiality, (paper as sculpture, collage, printing, drawing, photography, and painting), creating a multifaceted exploration of my inquiry into memory and self-perception. This includes making art that responds to objectification through the Male Gaze and enquiry into the Female Gaze.
The approach to my work is often Confessional and Parafeminist allowing me to reveal my individual, often abject, bodily experiences. These investigations have led me to the primary purpose of my art practice, to expand upon interpretations of the Male Gaze and the Female Gaze, asking the questions, “Who is looking?” and “How does that affect how I see myself?”
