It’s a Purse

It's a Purse is a series of five Australian Glomesh purses which have been fashioned to playfully relate to the vulva and metaphorically signify my complicity in exploitation regarding the value of my body. A woman's currency in patriarchal culture is often equated with her sexual attractiveness and more specifically to sexual access. These works question ownership of a woman’s body and historically women’s place in society and culture.

Through time immemorial, the question remains: “… if woman has ever owned her body or who owns her body most?” I propose that women have gained a place in society, but I question whether they have claimed ownership of their bodies on their own terms.
